Peoria Chiefs News Release
Lansing, MI - The Peoria Chiefs allowed five runs with two outs and fell to the Lansing Lugnuts 6-3 Monday night. Peoria is now 1-3 on a six-game roadtrip and four games under .500 for the first time this season at 7-11.
Lansing got on the board right away against Alberto Cabrera via the long ball. With two outs and the bases empty, Darin Mastroianni drove a solo home run over the left-field berm for a 1-0 Lugnuts lead. The homer was his first of the season, and the third allowed by Cabrera in four starts.
The Chiefs left runners at second and third in the first inning and another at second in the second frame. They finally broke through against Kyle Ginley in the third, but again let the Lugnuts off the hook. Leon Johnson led off with an infield single but was caught trying to steal second. Nate Samson followed with a walk and moved to second when Marquez Smith reached on an error. Kyler Burke drove a double to right and Samson scored easily to tie the game. But Smith was tagged out at the plate on a strong relay throw for the inning's second out. Ginley escaped further damage when Josh Donaldson flew out to left to end the frame.
The Lugnuts added to their lead with runs against Cabrera in the fourth and fifth. Manny Rodriguez hit his MWL-leading 11th double in the fourth and scored two batters later on a two-out double from Matt Liuzza. In the fifth, Moises Sierra tripled with two down and came home for a 3-1 Lansing lead on a single by Justin Jackson.
After playing good defense through five innings, the Chiefs bad defensive habits caught up to them in the sixth. After two quick outs, Liuzza drew a walk from reliever Jordan Latham. Jovan Rosa then misplayed a grounder at first and Marwin Gonzalez picked up the ball and threw wildly to first allowing the runners to move up. After the two-error play, Mike McDade singled to center for a 5-1 Lugnuts lead. Sierra led off the Lugnuts seventh with a long solo home run off Latham for a 6-1 advantage.
Peoria tried to mount a rally in the ninth against outfielder-turned pitcher Brian Pettway but ran out of steam. Donaldson led off with a single and moved to third when Blake Lalli doubled off the right-field wall. Rosa followed with a two-run double to cut the lead to 6-3 but the next three Chiefs went in order to end the game. Cabrera went five innings for the third time this season and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three. Latham allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits over two innings. Marcos Mateo walked one and struck out one in his lone inning.
Player of the Game -Jovan Rosa (1B) - Rosa doubled twice and drove in two runs to snap a 0-for-18 slump at the plate. Rosa finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI.
