Big Seventh Inning Keys Dragons Win

Dayton, Ohio-The Dayton Dragons sent 12 batters to the plate as part of a seven-run seventh inning on the way to a 10-3 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday night before a crowd of 7,944 at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons improved their record to 9-8 with the win. They are one game out of first place in the Midwest League's Eastern Division.

Todd Frazier, Kevyn Feiner and Brandon Menchaca each collected two hits and drove in two runs to lead a 10-hit Dragons attack as the club snapped a three-game losing streak.

Relief pitcher Jeff Jeffords (1-0) earned the win with two and two-thirds scoreless innings of work. He allowed three hits while walking two and striking out three.

Cedar Rapids took the lead with a run in the first inning without benefit of a base hit. Jeremy Moore walked, stole second, went to third on a ground out, and scored with two outs on a wild pitch by Dragons starting pitcher Scott Carroll.

The Dragons took advantage of three Cedar Rapids errors in the in the sixth inning to take the lead. Brandon Waring raced around to third when Cedar Rapids right fielder Tyler Johnson dropped his fly ball near the foul line. After Denis Phipps grounded to third, Waring scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Michael McKennon walked and went to second on Jason Bour's ground out. Kevyn Feiner followed with a single to center to drive in McKennon. Feiner attempted to advance to second on the same play when the throw back to the infield by center fielder Clay Fuller got away and when first baseman Efren Navarro, who was backing up the play, threw wildly to second trying to get Feiner, Kevyn raced to third. Justin Reed followed with a hit to left to bring in Feiner and make it a 3-1 game.

With one out in the Dayton seventh, Frazier started the big rally with a bunt single. Brandon Waring doubled to left to move Frazier to third and a wild pitch allowed Frazier to score to make it 4-1. With two outs, Michael McKennon singled in Waring and after Jason Bour was hit by a pitch, Feiner doubled in McKennon to make it 6-1. One batter later, Menchaca singled in both Bour and Feiner to make it 8-1, and Frazier added a two-run double, his second hit of the inning, to make it 10-1.

Cedar Rapids scored twice in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Carroll started and went four innings, allowing just one hit and one run with four walks and two strikeouts, throwing 79 pitches.

The Dragons meet Cedar Rapids again on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Luis Montano (2-0, 1.76) will start for Dayton against Cedar Rapids' Jordan Walden (1-1, 1.02).

Notes: The Dragons added shortstop Zack Cozart to the roster prior to Monday's game. He had been working out at the Reds extended spring training camp in Sarasota, Florida. Infielder Jake Kahaulelio was assigned from Dayton to extended spring training...Justin Reed became the first Dragons player this season to steal three bases in a game...With Cozart in the lineup at shortstop, Todd Frazier started the game at first base, the first appearance of his professional career at any position other than shortstop.
