Lancaster Stormers News Release
Somerset right-hander Josh Lowey has controlled the Barnstormers all season, but on Thursday night, he needed plenty of help from the eight other men on the field.
Lowey checked Lancaster on three hits over seven innings, pitching the Somerset Patriots to a 2-0 victory in the opener of a four-game series at TD Bank Park. It was the third straight win for Lowey (8-5) against the Barnstormers, yielding only eight hits and two runs in 18 1/3 innings.
The evening started on a frustrating note for the Barnstormers batters. Jerry Owens ripped a line drive right into the glove of second baseman Jeff Baisley. Blake Gailen followed with a blast to left center, but Jonny Tucker went up over the wall to take a home run away.
Lancaster's best chance to score off Lowey came in the fifth when Gustavo Molina lofted a short fly ball single to left with two outs, and Kyle Haines followed with a walk. Owens lined to center to end the inning which started with Travis Denker flying out to the wall.
The Barnstormers' frustrations carried all the way to the end of the game. With closer Jon Hunton in for the Patriots, Daryle Ward cranked a steaming line drive to first that was picked by Baisley, who had just shifted over to the position. Ryan Harvey and Denker both singled up the middle around a medium fly ball by Kyle Russell. With the tying runs on base, Olmo Rosario skimmed a grounder to third baseman Corey Smith. The force at third completed the ninth shutout thrown against Lancaster this season.
Lenny DiNardo (4-6) found trouble only in the fourth inning. Aharon Eggleston led off with a ground single up the middle. Jake Fox yanked a liner to left which was nicely kept to a single by Gailen, putting runners at first and second. Smith flied to deep left for the first out, but Cory Aldridge lined a base hit to right, loading the bases. Baisley brought one home with a single off the third base bag, and DiNardo followed with his only walk of the night as Adam Donachie forced home Fox with the second run.
The left-hander got a double play out of James Skelton to end the inning. No other Patriots runners advanced beyond first base. DiNardo was lifted with two outs in the eighth in favor of Yoslan Herrera.
Lancaster sends right-hander Dwayne Pollok (9-3) to the hill on Friday night against right-hander Brad Thompson (6-4). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Owens extended his hitting streak to 15 with a two-out single in the eighth...Gailen failed to reach base for the first time in the last 34 games...DiNardo threw the sixth quality start by the Barnstormers in eight games since the All-Star break and his team leading eighth of the season...The nine shutouts ties the 2009 team for the most in franchise history.
