Lowe, Dillas Recover from Rough First Inning, Beat Thunder 8-3

AMARILLO, TX - Amarillo Dillas starting pitcher Ronald Lowe gave up three runs in the first inning, but settled down and allowed only one hit past the first while striking out seven to give the Dillas a 8-3 win over the Coastal Bend Thunder on Monday night in front of 1,330 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.

Lowe (6-4) allowed just two hits and three unearned runs in six innings of work. Coastal Bend starter Doug Brandt (3-7) got the loss, going an out past five innings and gave up four runs off five hits. Dillas closer Ramon Geronimo got his 18th save, striking out two in the ninth.

The Thunder took the lead in the first inning as Mike Lewis reached on an error to lead off, went to second on a walk, went to third on a Kevin Griffin fielder's choice and scored on a Mike Goss RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Both Griffin and Goss would score on pass balls for a 3-0 Coastal Bend lead.

Amarillo got their first run in the fifth inning as Jermel Lomack walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Adam De La Garza for a 3-1 score.

The Dillas took the lead in the sixth. Carlos Figueroa, Julio Martinez and Stephen Douglas led off with singles to load the bases, while Rob Recuenco reached on an error to score Figueroa and Martinez, while Douglas scored on a wild pitch for a 4-3 Amarillo lead.

The Dillas added three in the eighth as Douglas scored on a Recuenco sacrifice fly, while De La Garza singled to score Alberto Cruz and Lomack for a four-run advantage. Douglas hit a solo homerun in the ninth to move up by a score of 8-3.

Relievers J.R. Boling, Tyler Pearson and Geronimo struck out seven in the last three innings to preserve the 8-3 victory.

With the win, the Dillas improve to 46-33 while the Thunder fall to 28-51. Monday, Amarillo will take on Coastal Bend for the final game of a four-game set at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:50pm on AudioSportsOnline via www.myamarillodillas.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
