Dillas Three-Peat As Champions

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas captured the United League Baseball Championship for the third-straight year as they defeated the Edinburg Roadrunners 11-9 behind co-MVPs Kevin Butler and Carlos Figueroa on Monday night in front of 2,405 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.
Edinburg took the early lead as Wilmer Pino led off with a double in the first, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Nelson Teilon RBI single for an early two-run lead. Teilon hit a two-run homerun in the third inning to move Edinburg up 4-0.
The Dillas got on the scoreboard in the third inning as Brian Bueno walked, went to second on a Joaquin Rodriguez single and scored on a Figueroa RBI single. The Dillas got within a run in the fourth as Alberto Cruz led off with a solo homerun and Rob Recuenco scored on a Bueno RBI single for a 4-3 deficit.
The Roadrunners struck back in the fifth as Teilon hit a two-RBI single, Ambiorix Concepcion hit an RBI single and Batista hit an RBI groundout for an 8-3 lead.
Amarillo responded in the fifth as Rodriguez led off with a single, went to second on an error and scored on an RBI double by Figueroa. They added two more in the sixth as Figueroa hit a bases loaded single to score Andrew Wong and Bueno for a 8-6 score.
The Dillas came all the way back with a huge seventh inning. Cruz led off with a hit-by-pitch, Rob Recuenco walked and Wong singled to load the bases. Butler followed and sent the first pitch he saw to deep center field over the head of the center fielder. All three runners scored on the triple to give the Dillas the lead. Butler ran from third on the next pitch while Bueno bunted the ball just in front of the plate to score Butler on the suicide squeeze for a 10-8 advantage.
Edinburg got a run on the board in the eighth as Daryl Jones doubled and scored on an Osiel Flores RBI double for a one-run game at 10-9.
Cruz hammered a 435 ft homerun to dead center field in the eighth to get the lead back to two. Geronimo allowed a leadoff single in the ninth, but got a groundout, strikeout and a flyout from Batista to end the game and preserve the championship victory 11-9.
With the win, the Dillas win the United League Baseball Championship Series over the Roadrunners 3-1. The Dillas have now won three-straight United League Championships and this marks the fourth championship in the history of the Dillas.
