AMARILLO, TX - For the third straight season, the Amarillo Dillas are headed to the United League Championship Series after starting pitcher Ronald Lowe handled the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings with a complete game 6-1 victory and a 2-0 semifinal series win on Wednesday night in front of 1,368 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.9/1/10
Lowe (1-0) after giving up only one hit through six innings, allowed only one run off five hits with 11 strikeouts in nine innings of work. WhiteWings starter David Cross (0-1) went one out past the third inning, allowing six runs off five hits in the effort.
The Dillas got on the board first in the first inning as co-Rookie of the Year Adam De La Garza walked to lead off and scored on a Carlos Figueroa RBI double. Figueroa went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Stephen Douglas RBI sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Amarillo added more in the fourth as Douglas reached on a strikeout/wild pitch and scored on a two-run homerun from Alberto Cruz. Rob Recuenco and Brian Bueno both followed with singles while De La Garza doubled to score both runners for a 6-0 advantage.
The WhiteWings got their first run in the seventh. Having only one hit off Lowe through six innings, Yeurys Tejada doubled to lead off the inning. Lowe struck out ULB MVP Levy Ventura and Brian Nichols, but Wellington Dotel singled to score Tejada. Eric Gonzalez struck out to end the inning with the WhiteWings trailing 6-1.
Lowe went the rest of the way, allowing only two more hits through the ninth for the victory in the game and the series for Amarillo.
With the win, the Dillas win the semifinal playoff 2-0 over the WhiteWings in the best-of-three series. Friday, Amarillo will travel to take on the winner of the Edinburg-Laredo series for the first game of the United League Baseball Championship Series. The Dillas will return to Amarillo on Sunday night for Game Three. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
