Battles Are On For Playoff Spots As 2010 United League Season Winds Down
Published on August 16, 2010 under United League Baseball (ULB) News Release
Four clubs will make the 2010 playoffs at the end of August and five teams are battling it out for those positions.
Two of the teams, Edinburg and Amarillo, are vying for the first place position. As of this writing, the Roadrunners are still in the top spot they have held since the beginning of the season, but the Dillas, last year's United League Baseball champion, are just one-half game behind.
Then there are the San Angelo Colts, Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings and the Laredo Broncos, all shooting for the other two spots.
Also, as of this writing, those three teams are deadlocked in third place.
The Broncos have a major added attraction, former major league star Jose Conseco has joined the club for the remainder of the season.
He will play in the remaining home games and when the Broncos are on the road he will hold some youth baseball camps.
The regular season ends on Aug. 27 and the top four will immediately go into the playoff season.
Over the past 10 games (again as of this writing), the Dillas and the Broncos have been the hottest clubs, each having won seven.
The WhiteWings have cooled down a bit and are at 6-4, The Roadrunners are 5-5, Coastal Bend Thunder are 3-7 and the Colts are struggling and are 2-8.
Leading the league in batting is Amarillo's Joaquin Rodriguez, who is hitting at a .389 clip. Next is San Angelo's Josh Collazo, .378.
Others are San Angelo's Landon Camp, .371; Coastal Bend's Brian Nichols, .353; Coastal Bend's Mike Goss, .345; Rio's Javis Ruiz, .343; and Coastal Bend's Jonathan Cisneros, .340.
San Angelo's Jason Crosland leads the home run derby, with 23 four-baggers. Rio's Levy Ventura has 20, and Camp has 19 and Nichols has 17.
Amarillo's Alberto Cruz has 75 RBIs Crosland has 73, Ventura has 72 and Collazo has 71.
Edinburg's Eric Montoya still leads in wins, with eight, but he has to share it with Laredo's Juan Peralta. Rio's Luis Montano, Laredo's Santo Hernandez and Edinburg's Wardell Starling each have seven.
San Angelo's Ezequiel Astacio still leads in strikouts, with 112. Hernandez has 108, Rio's Misuel DeJesus has 102 and Amarillo's Ron Lowe has 98.
