Louisville Walks Away with Win over Toledo

May 30, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

A day after a walk-off victory for Toledo, the tables were turned Monday afternoon, as Louisville scored two ninth inning runs to win 3-2 at Louisville Slugger Field.

For eight innings, the Hen pen pieced together a premier pitching performance by only allowing four hits against a red hot Bats offense, as Louisville had 12 or more hits in four of their last six games. However, the third blown save of the season for Bruce Rondon began with a leadoff single off the bat of Brandon Allen who came around to tie the game one out later when Kyle Waldrop laced a double into the right field corner. With two outs, the Bats' speedy leadoff hitter Juan Perez stood in and grounded a ball to no-man's land between first and second, which Chad Huffman picked up and threw to a covering Rondon. Perez was called safe at first, and Waldrop with some heads-up base running had been running on contact and sped around third to slide home safely for the walk-off win, 3-2.

Toledo made it 1-0 in the top of the third inning courtesy of the first career MILB AAA home run off the bat of Jason Krizan.

Casey McGehee put the Mud Hens up 2-0 in the fifth inning after he deposited a souvenir into the stands in left field for his third home run of the season.

Angel Nesbitt came out of the Toledo bullpen in the bottom of the sixth and allowed back-to-back singles off the bats of Chris Berset and Juan Perez, followed by a sac bunt, an intentional walk, and a Jermaine Curtis walk to make it 2-1. However, Nesbitt responded well, striking out Scott Schebler on three pitches and inducing a groundout to leave the bases loaded.

The Bats threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as Seth Mejias-Brean led off with a double, but Blaine Hardy, who was called upon to get the final out of the inning, got the job done thanks to a nifty barehanded defensive play at third by Casey McGehee.

Dustin Molleken made his second spot start of the season for the Mud Hens, as the first was also against the Bats, and the righty went five fabulous innings while allowing only one hit, no runs, three walks, and struck out three.

Anthony DeSclafani, making a rehab start for the Cincinnati Reds, looked like the pitcher who was supposed to be the Opening Day starter before his oblique injury, as he went four innings while only allowing the one hit, one run, and striking out seven.

Logan Kensing pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Mud Hens, and getting the win for the Bats was Drew Hayes who went 2.1 innings in relief while striking out three and only allowing one hit.

Toledo, now 7-4 on the season against Louisville, plays game two of the series tomorrow night with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. The Mud Hens return to Fifth Third Field Friday for a four game home stand against the Indianapolis Indians.
