International League Names Players of the Week
May 30, 2016 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Rochester center fielder Byron Buxton and Toledo pitcher Chad Bell have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 23-Â29.  Buxton follows Red Wings pitcher Andrew Albers and left fielder Adam Brett Walker to give Rochester weekly awards in three consecutive weeks, a feat they also accomplished last August (Buxton, Pat Dean, and Logan Darnell).  Bell is the second member of the Red Wings to be so honored this season, joining Steven Moya (May 2-Â8). Â
BYRON BUXTON, Rochester Red Wings IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
This week Rochester's Byron Buxton showed why he's considered one of the game's top prospects, hitting .409 and leading the International League with three home runs, seven extra-Âbase hits, 23 total bases, eight runs scored, and a 1.045 slugging percentage.  He went deep in each of the first three games for Rochester this week, a stretch which included a season-Âhigh three-Âhit game Tuesday against Indianapolis.  Buxton is now hitting .333 since being sent to Rochester in late April, which would be the top average in the League if he had just eight more plate appearances.  He's tied for 4th in the IL this season with 26 runs scored. Â
22-Âyear-Âold Byron Buxton is in his fifth season as a professional player since being selected with the second overall pick of the 2012 draft by Minnesota.  He was Baseball America's 2013 Minor League Player of the Year, and he has been ranked by MLB.com as the second-Âbest prospect in all of baseball.  He is a veteran of 63 games with the Twins since last season.  Buxton is a native of Baxley, Georgia.Â
CHAD BELL, Toledo Mud Hens IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Left-Âhander Chad Bell had made just one start for Toledo since coming over in a trade from the Texas organization.  The part-Âtime reliever started two games for the Mud Hens this week and delivered 11.0 scoreless innings of work.  He was victorious Tuesday against Durham, limiting the Bulls to just three hits as part of a 5-Â0 shutout.  Back on the hill Sunday to face Buffalo, Bell turned in a season-Âhigh 6.0 innings of scoreless, two-Âhit baseball with five strikeouts.  The bullpen didn't hold the 1-Â0 lead after he departed, though Toledo ultimately came back to win 3-Â2.  Bell has now made five appearances for Toledo, equaling the number he had with Round Rock prior to the trade.  His combined Triple-ÂA record so far this season is 3-Â0 with a 1.91 ERA. Â
26-Âyear-Âold Chad Bell is in his sixth season pitching professionally.  He was drafted by the Rangers in 2009 and was with the organization until this month's trade to Detroit.  He has yet to make his Major League debut.  Bell is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee.
