Charlotte, NC - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Charlotte Knights, 6-5, Monday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Chiefs answered the Knights' two-run first with four in the second and led until the bottom of the ninth when the Knights tied the game and eventually won in the 11th.
Charlotte (25-27) tallied two first-inning runs after just three batters. Tim Anderson led off with a triple against A.J. Cole. Carlos Sanchez then singled to score Anderson for a 1-0 Knights lead. Jason Coats followed with a double to score Sanchez and push the lead to 2-0.
Syracuse (27-22) immediately answered with a four-spot in the top of the second, with all the runs scoring with two outs. Caleb Ramsey and Scott Sizemore each walked against Chris Volstad. Pedro Severino followed with a single to center, scoring Ramsey to cut the deficit to one. Tony Campana then singled to load the bases. After a mound visit, Trea Turner cleared the bases with a three-run double to give the Chiefs a 4-2 lead.
The Knights got back on the board in the fourth. Jason Bourgeois singled with two outs, moved to third on Nicky Delmonico's double, and scored on Leury Garcia's single to cut the score to 4-3.
The Chiefs again answered the Knights' run in their next turn at bat. Turner doubled with one out in the fifth and scored two batters later on Matt den Dekker's double to give Syracuse a 5-3 lead.
Despite the early runs, Cole settled in and hurled an impressive outing. After allowed three hits to the first three batters, Cole allowed just three hits the rest of the way in seven innings.
The Chiefs held the lead until the bottom of the ninth. Trevor Gott came out of the bullpen and walked Matt Davidson. Danny Hayes followed with the game-tying two-run home run, squaring the score at five.
The game remained tied until the 11th. Coats singled off Matt Grace to start the inning. Davidson replaced Coats at first after a force out at second. Two batters later, Jason Bourgeois singled to put runners on first and second. The Knights pinch-ran Andy Parrino for Davidson, and Parrino scored on Delmonico's game-winning single to center field to give the Knights a 6-5 victory.
The Chiefs and Knights return to BB&T Ballpark Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Taylor Hill is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Anthony Ranaudo for Charlotte.
