Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY -The Louisville Bats (33-33) took advantage of a wild night from left-handed pitcher Manny Banuelos to beat the Gwinnett Braves (31-33) 4-1 Tuesday night in game two of a three-game series at Louisville Slugger Field.
Banuelos (L, 5-2), who began the current road trip at 5-0, dropped his second straight decision by pitching 5.0 innings with six hits, four runs (two earned), a season-high five walks and five strikeouts.
The Bats tallied a run in the bottom of the first off the Braves lefty, as leadoff batter Jason Bourgeois walked before Steve Selsky did the same two batters later. A wild pitch by Banuelos moved the runners to second and third, and then a passed ball off the mitt of catcher Jose Yepez scored Bourgeois for a 1-0 Bats lead.
Gwinnett tied the game in the top of the second. Banuelos led off the frame with a single to left off of Louisville starting pitcher Layne Somsen and moved to second when a hard ground ball off the bat of Eury Perez hit Somsen in the foot. Somsen was able to throw Perez out at first but had to leave the game. The Bats brought in lefty Joel Bender to pitch in his first-ever Triple-A game. A passed ball off the mitt of catcher Ramon Cabrera moved Banuelos to third, and Eric Young, Jr. plated him with a single to center to make it 1-1.
However, in the bottom of the fourth Banuelos walked Hernan Iribarren, who then scored from first on a double to left-center by Jermaine Curtis for a 2-1 Louisville advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Josh Satin ripped a two-out double to left and scored on a single to center by Cabrera. Todd Cunningham misplayed the ball in center field, which allowed Cabrera to circle the bases with the Bats' fourth and final run of the game.
The Gwinnett bullpen did a fine job once again, as righty Carlos Fisher, who replaced Banuelos in the sixth, worked 2.0 innings with two strikeouts. Fellow right-hander Peter Moylan went 1.0 inning with two strikeouts.
For the Bats, Somsen pitched 2.1 innings with two hits, one earned run, one walk and one strikeout. Bender (W, 1-0) worked 2.2 innings, gave up five hits and struck out three. Right-hander Sam LeCure (H, 4) went 2.0 innings with one hit and two strikeouts. Jose De La Torre (S, 1) pitched 2.0 innings with one strikeout.
At the plate, Young led Gwinnett with a 3-for-4 night that included the G-Braves' lone RBI. The Bats were paced by Curtis who was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, and Satin, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The G-Braves and Bats conclude the three-game series at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at Louisville Slugger Field. Right-hander Matt Wisler (3-4, 4.29) will be on the mound for Gwinnett. The Bats will start righty Dylan Axelrod (3-4, 4.57). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 11:15 a.m.
