Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens made their way to New York Monday night to continue their road trip against the IL North Syracuse Chiefs. The Chiefs didn't waste much time at Bank Stadium as they hit Hens' starter Tim Melville hard in the top of the first inning for what was the majority of the offense in the first game of the series.
Syracuse's Kevin Keyes got the scoring started with an RBI double, bringing around Jason Martinson and taking the lead 1-0. After a Mario Lisson RBI single, Rick Hague followed with his first home run of the year sending a Melville offering into the right field seats and plating three more Chiefs.
Time Melville was left on the bump even after his shaky first due to the frequent use of the hen pen in the previous series against Pawtucket. Melville tossed 5.1 innings surrendering seven runs on nine hits, racking up five strikeouts. The right hander is 2-5 on the season. In the fifth, the Hens' put their first run across the plate thanks to another RBI knock from Detroit Tigers' designated hitter Victor Martinez, who appeared in his second rehab game. Martinez finished 2 for 4 on the night. Another bright spot for the Toledo offense came from right fielder Steven Moya, as he compiled two hits in his four plate appearances, with two RBI. Moya is hitting .234 at the plate this season.
For the Chiefs, Taylor Jordan earned his second win of the season as he silenced the Hens offense for seven full innings, allowing just a single run on five hits with five strikeouts. Leading the Chiefs' offense was first baseman Mario Lisson, going two for four at the dish with three RBI.
The two squads will be back in action in game two of the three game set Tuesday night at 7:05 pm in Syracuse. For Toledo it will be Shane Greene making his Triple A season debut on the mound, after his recent demotion from Detroit. Greene was 4-6 with a 5.82 ERA in his time with the Tigers this season, recording forty four punchouts.
