
Louisville Drops Rain-Shortened Game to Clippers, 8-5

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville Bats (6-9) were defeated by the Columbus Clippers (9-5) by an 8-5score at Louisville Slugger Field. The game was called in the bottom of the eighth, with Columbus stealing the series from Louisville, also dropping the Bats to 3-5 on the homestand.
The Clippers struck first in the game getting a home run in each of the first three innings bringing the score to 4-0. Ryan Flaherty started the show for Columbus his first of two two-run home runs in the first inning. Eric Haase got a solo shot in the second, and Francisco Lindor followed with a solo shot of his own in the third inning.
In the third inning, Phillip Ervin got a stand up double, then got to third when Clippers catcher Haase overthrew a pickoff attempt to second base. Josh VanMeter hit a single scoring Ervin and giving the Bats their first run of the game. Columbus didn't miss a beat scoring runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Eric Stamets got an RBI single making the score 5-1. In the fifth, Columbus tagged on three more runs when Jesus Reyes came into pitch for the Bats. Brandon Barnes hit a ball to right fielder Aristides Aquino whose error allowed Lindor to score from first. Flaherty followed with his second two-run shot bringing the score to 8-1 for the Clippers.
The Bats got out of the sixth inning for the first time in the game without allowing the Clippers to score. Reyes ending the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. They countered the no run inning by scoring a run of their own from an Aquino solo home run to bring the score to 8-2, that home run being his 100th career home run. Rob Refsnyder hit a three-run home run of his own bringing the score to 8-5 in the bottom of the eighth.
Louisville's pitchers all gave up hits this game. Starting pitcher Jose Lopez gave up eight hits, five runs, and struck out six in his four-innings pitched. Reyes pitched 2.0 innings giving up three runs, four hits, walking two and striking out four. Matt Bowman pitched one inning giving up two hits and striking out and Anthony Bass pitched one inning striking out two and not allowing a hit, the two being the only two Bats pitchers to not give up a run in the game.
Louisville heads out on the road to face the Indianapolis Indians, Triple-A affiliate to the Pittsburgh Pirates, for a three-game series at Victory Field. First pitch is set for Friday night at 7:15 p.m. with right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne (0-0, 4.50) set to pitch for the Bats. He is set to oppose Indians right-hander Rookie Davis (0-1, 6.48).
