Ottawa Champions News Release
OTTAWA - After a long bus ride to New Jersey, the Ottawa Champions dropped their first game of the series against the Jackals in remarkable fashion. Jackals RHP Eduar Lopez threw his first-career no-hitter, keeping the Champions guessing for all nine innings.
He tossed just 89 pitches over his hitless frames. The former Tampa Bay Rays farmhand was only making his second start as a Jackal, only lasting five innings his first time out. Tuesday night's victory introduces him to the rest of the Can-Am League with authority.
It was the first no-hitter in Can-Am League play since the Champions did it on June 27, 2017. RHP Phillippe Aumont threw that one against Team Dominican Republic.
With the result, the Champions have now been involved in the last three no-nos in the Can-Am League. They were also no-hit by the Sussex County Miners in 2015, in a seven-inning contest at RCGT Park.
The night was full of firsts for New Jersey. C Kevin Torres launched his first home run of the 2018 season down the right field line in the sixth inning, giving the Jackals insurance runs. His two run shot made it 5-0, and was part of a three-run inning for New Jersey.
RHP Jake Hale took the loss for Ottawa. While overshadowed by the performance of Lopez, the veteran pitched valiantly in his start. Out of the five runs he allowed, only two of them were earned. He gave up seven hits over his six innings of work, while walking one and striking out a single batter.
After finishing off this series in New Jersey with a day-night doubleheader Wednesday, the Champions will play at home on Thursday when the Champions play host to the Rockland Boulders in a series with postseason implications.
Tickets for all Champions home games are available at www.ottawachampions.com, in-person at the RCGT Park box office, or by calling 613-745-BALL (2255).
