
Loons Top Dragons on Opening Night

Dayton, Ohio-Tony Delmonico belted two home runs and added a triple as the Great Lakes Loons defeated the Dayton Dragons 14-3 in the Midwest League opener for both teams on Thursday night. A crowd of 8,385 attended the game at Fifth Third Field.
The Loons collected 17 hits and turned a close game into a route in the late innings by scoring nine times over their last three frames. Kyle Russell added a three-run home run and a triple to the Great Lakes attack.
The Dragons fell behind 4-0 in the second inning and trailed 5-1 through six innings before the Loons scored two times in the seventh, four more in the eighth, and three in the ninth.
David Sappelt had two hits including a double and stole a base to lead Dayton's seven-hit attack. Kyle Day added a triple and scored a run while Humberto Sosa had a double and a run scored.
Great Lakes starting pitcher JonMichael Redding earned the win, going five and two-thirds innings and allowing three hits and one run with two walks and six strikeouts.
Dragons starter Matt Fairel took the losss. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts over two-plus innings of work.
The Dragons host the Loons in the second game of the season on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Josh Ravin will start for Dayton.
Notes: Dragons pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters. Reliever Mace Thurman struck out six in two and two-thirds innings.
