Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Anthony Bass combined with a pair of relievers on a four-hit shutout, as the Fort Wayne TinCaps (1-0) defeated the host Lansing Lugnuts (0-1), 4-0, before a crowd of 6,238 at Oldsmobile Park.
Beginning their 14th season in existence, the Lugnuts sent only two batters above the minimum to the plate, collecting three scattered singles against Bass (1-0). The Fort Wayne right-hander struck out four over six scoreless innings before yielding to relievers Eric Gonzalez and Brad Brach for the final three frames.
Nine days shy of his 19th birthday, Lansing starter Henderson Alvarez (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing an earned run on four hits over four innings.
Shortstop Drew Cumberland and rightfielder Sawyer Carroll led the way offensively for the TinCaps, formerly known as the Wizards, each collecting a pair of hits and a pair of RBI.
Kenny Wilson, Yohermyn Chavez, Mike McDade, and Jon Talley collected a base hit for the Lugnuts in the losing cause, though Wilson and McDade also committed errors.
The Lugnuts and TinCaps play the second game of their three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Oldsmobile Park. In a battle of southpaws, John Anderson will take the mound for Lansing, opposed by Fort Wayne's Nick Schmidt.
