Bees Lose Opener

Burlington, IA (April 9, 2009) - The Burlington Bees opened the 2009 season at home with a 6-3 loss to the Clinton LumberKings. The defending Midwest League champions registered just six hit in the loss while the Clinton pitching staff did not allow a single earned run.

The Bees began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Nick Van Stratten singled and then moved to second on an Eric Hosmer ground-out. Kyle Martin then came to the plate and hit a triple to score Van Stratten and put the Bees ahead 1-0.

The lead was short-lived as Clinton scored two runs in the top of the second to take a 2- lead. With two outs in the inning and runners on first and second, Terry Serrano doubled to score both Mario Martinez and Ben Billingsly. Clinton added one more run in the fourth inning when Travis Howell hit a lead-off homerun. The LumberKings extended their lead to 5-1 by scoring two more runs in the fifth.

The Bees tried to come back by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Patrick Norris led the inning off by reaching second on an error. Van Stratten was then bit by a pitch before Hosmer singled to score Norris. Van Stratten then came around to score on a throwing error during a run-down involving Hosmer. The Bees could not pull any closer than two runs and Clinton scored one more run in the ninth to capture the 6-3 lead.

Bryan Casey got the start for the Bees. In three innings, he allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks as he took the loss. The Bees employed four relief pitchers in the game. Manauris Baez pitched two innings of no-hit baseball.

The Bees registered six hits in the game. Nick Francis was the only Bee with more than one hit as he went 2-4.

The Bees return to action Friday night in game two of the three game series with Clinton. Sam Runion is the scheduled starter. First pitch at Community Field is scheduled for 6:30.
