Cougars Score First but Drop Opener

PEORIA, IL - The Kane County Cougars opened their 19th season of baseball Thursday night in Peoria against the Chiefs and took a quick 1-0 lead before ultimately dropping a 4-1 decision in front of 2,031 fans at O'Brien Field.

David Thomas led off the game with a single and later scored on a single by Jason Christian, but that became the Cougars' only run. They totaled nine hits and went 1-2-3 only twice but stranded seven runners in the defeat.

Starter Matt Fitts (0-1) retired the first 10 batters he faced but ran in to trouble in the bottom of the fourth, allowing a two-run double to Rebel Ridling and later giving up one more run in the fifth. He lasted five innings and allowed three hits, walked none and fanned three while hitting two batters in the loss. Josue Selenis followed with two scoreless relief frames, but Mike Hart allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the eight for the 4-1 finish. Peoria starter Aaron Shafer (1-0) posted the win, and Ryan Buchter notched the save.

The Cougars (0-1) and Chiefs (1-0) continue their three-game series Friday night at 6:30 CDT when Shawn Haviland squares off against Chris Carpenter.
