Great Lakes Loons News Release

DAVENPORT, IA - The Great Lakes Loons rallied from a five-run deficit to tie the game in the fifth inning, but the Quad Cities River Bandits scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pick up a 7-5 win and a series sweep of the Loons for a second straight season. Quad Cities has won nine consecutive games against Great Lakes at Modern Woodmen Park.

The River Bandits jumped out to a 5-0 lead off Loons starter Nathan Eovaldi through two innings with the help of two costly Loons errors. In the first inning, Quad Cities scored twice after an error on a grounder by number two hitter Jason Stidham. Jaime Pedroza fielded the ball behind second base and threw to first, but the bag was unoccupied and leadoff batter Jose Garcia scored from second while Stidham moved to second with no outs. A groundout and a sac fly scored Stidham with the second run of the frame.

In the second, Jack Cawley led off with a walk and reached second when Anthony Hatch dropped the ball on a potential double-play grounder. Garcia delivered an RBI double to make it 3-0, and Frederick Parejo smacked a two-run single with two outs to give the River Bandits a 5-0 edge.

After an RBI single by Matt Wallach got the Loons on the board in the fourth inning, Great Lakes batted around to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Esteban Lopez and Dee Gordon singled to start the inning, and a walk to Jaime Pedroza loaded the bases with no outs. Anthony Hatch lined a two-run single to left field and chased Quad Cities starter Miguel Tapia.

Tony Delmonico walked to greet reliever Adam Veres to reload the bases, and after a strikeout, Alfredo Silverio hit a sac fly to cut the lead to 5-4. Wallach drove in his second run of the game with a bloop single to center field and tied the game at 5-5.

Quad Cities scored the eventual winning run in the sixth off Ethan Martin (4-5) when Matt Carpenter led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a one-out double by Jack Cawley. They tacked on another run in the seventh on a leadoff double, stolen base and sac fly for the final margin.

Martin took the loss, allowing two runs in four innings. Eovaldi started and worked three innings, allowing only two earned runs. Veres got the win for Quad Cities by pitching two innings and not allowing a run. Matt Frevert got the final out in the eighth and worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of the year.
