South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - With a 6-5 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday night, the South Bend Silver Hawks took two out of three in the series, and return home to South Bend with a 3-2 record on the rain-shortened five game road trip. The Silver Hawks split with Clinton after the final game of that series was rained out, before winning the series from the Kernels.
Cedar Rapids scored three runs against South Bend starter Brett Moorhouse (WP, 5-10) in the bottom of the second to take the early lead. Three hits, two errors, a hit batter, and a sacrifice bunt led to the three runs, two of which were charged as earned runs on Moorhouse's line. Matt Crawford and Dwayne Bailey had RBIs for Cedar Rapids in the inning, with the other run scoring on an error.
The Silver Hawks immediately answered with two runs in the top of the third against Tyler Chatwood (ND). Jake Elmore started the rally with a single and scored on a RBI double by Alfredo Marte. Marte picked up his team-leading 51st RBI of the season and then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-2 game.
The Kernels extended the lead back to three in the fourth on a two run homer by Anel De Los Santos. His fourth blast of the season put Cedar Rapids up 5-2.
South Bend again answered, scoring a run in the fifth against Chatwood and three in the sixth against Chris Armstrong (LP, 2-2). Marc Krauss had a RBI single in the fifth to bring the Hawks back in the game at 5-3. Marte added two more RBIs to his total with a double in the sixth, and then scored on a triple from A.J. Pollock to give the Silver Hawks their first lead of the night at 6-5.
Sean Morgan (ND), Bayron Zepeda (ND), and Bryan Woodall (ND) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, leading up to the ninth. Woodall has now thrown 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings, a team high for 2009, and has now allowed an earned run in his last 26.0 innings out of the pen.
Justin Mace (SV, 6) struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his sixth save of the season and his second save of the series.
South Bend returns home to open up a series against the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday night. First pitch at Coveleski Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 PM Eastern Time on "Christmas in July" night. South Bend's RHP Randy Rodriguez (3-8, 5.10 ERA) will start against Quad Cities' RHP Scott McGregor (4-7, 6.98 ERA).
