Bees win to take series from TinCaps

Burlington, IA (July 27, 2009) - Nick Francis hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning and Shawn Griffin hit a two-run homerun Monday night at Community Field as the Bees defeated Ft. Wayne 5-4. With the win, the Bees took two out of three from the TinCaps and finished the six-game home stand at 3-3.

The Bees opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Patrick Norris singled. Norris then stole second and came all the way around to score on an error during the play. The TinCaps took their only lead of the day scoring two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. The Bees answered with one run on the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Jason Taylor led the inning off with a single and then stole second. After moving to third on a fly-out, Taylor scored on a Juan Graterol infield single.

The Bees took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jose Bonilla walked to lead the inning off and was sacrificed to second by Graterol. Shawn Griffin then hit a two-run homerun to give the Bees the lead. The TinCaps answered with two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game. In the bottom of the eighth, the Bees scored the final run of the day. With one out, Adrian Ortiz walked and then stole second. Francis hit a two-out RBI single to score Ortiz and give the Bees their 5-4 lead.

Due to a rain out four days ago, the game was a bullpen game with three bullpen pitchers available for the contest. Craig Rodriguez made his first professional start pitching 2.1 innings allowing just one hit with three strikeouts and three walks. James Thompson pitched 3.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Barry Bowden pitched the final 3.1 innings picking up the win to move to 3-2 on the season. He allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks. As a staff, the Bees had 13 strikeouts, which is just one less than the season-high.

The Bees were outhit in the game 9-6. Norris was the only Bees with more than one hit going 2-4 with a run. Griffin had two RBI.
