Geneva, Ill.-Leonardo Gil's single to right field scored Jeremy Barfield from second base with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Kane County Cougars defeated the Dayton Dragons 3-2 on Monday night. The Cougars victory spoiled the heroics of Dayton's Josh Fellhauer, who hit a game-tying home run with two outs and two strikes in the top of the ninth inning.

The Cougars winning rally against Dragons reliever Jordan Hotchkiss began when Barfield was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the ninth. Barfield went to second on a sacrifice bunt and after Chris Berroa walked, Gil lined a single to right. Fellhauer fielded the hit on the first bounce and fired a strike to the plate. Dragons catcher Jordan Wideman took the throw and reached to his left to tag Barfield before he touched home plate. But just before he applied the tag, the ball fell out of Wideman's glove and Barfield was safe to end the game.

Trailing in the top of the ninth, Fellhauer delivered a dramatic game-tying homer to pull the Dragons even at 2-2. It was Fellhauer's fourth homer of the season and came with the Dragons literally down to their final strike of the game.

The Dragons took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the third before Kane County's Mike Spina connected on a two-run homer off Dragons starter Oscar Castro to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead and close out the scoring until the ninth inning.

Dayton finished with nine hits. Fellhauer went 3 for 5 to lead the way. Carlos Mendez had a hit to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games while Byron Wiley had one hit to push his hitting streak to nine straight.

The Dragons have won seven of their last nine games and completed their six-game road trip with a 4-2 record.

The Dragons (14-16, 42-58) return home to Fifth Third Field in Dayton to start a 10-game home stand on Tuesday against the Peoria Chiefs (15-15, 53-46) at 7:00 p.m. (EDT). Mark Serrano (0-0, 2.25) will make his first professional start for Dayton.
