Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - A disputed sixth inning home run proved to the deciding blow for the Great Lakes Loons Thursday night, as they defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 3-1 before 6,252 fans at Oldsmobile Park.
With the score tied 1-1 and a runner at first base, the Loons' Brian Mathews lifted an arcing fly ball into deep right-center field. The ball appeared to go through the railing on the top of the outfield wall, which according to the ground rules would have been a double. Instead field umpire Nathan Thompson ruled it to be a home run, giving Great Lakes the 3-1 advantage.
From there the Loons bullpen shut down Lansing, as Miguel Sanfler threw three shutout innings and Migeul Ramirez fired a perfect ninth to pick up his league leading 12th save.
Lansing had trailed 1-0 in the fourth inning when Moises Sierra laced a double into left-center field that brought Matt Liuzza home from first base to tie the game at 1-1.
Victory Garate (3-0) got the win for the Loons by tossing five innings. He allowed one run and gave up all four of the Lugnuts' hits in the game. He was also able to work around four walks while striking out six.
Luis Perez (1-5) took the loss for the Lugnuts despite turning in a quality start. He hurled six frames and gave up all three runs to the Loons, but only two were earned. He fanned five batters and walked just one in the contest.
Lansing (28-25) remains tied for first place with West Michigan, while Great Lakes (25-27) is now within 2 1/2 games of the top spot. The two teams will meet again Friday night as the series continues at Oldsmobile Park. Lefty Marc Rzepczynski (0-1, 3.06) will take the mound for the Lugnuts, while right-hander Robert Blevins (2-3, 2.43) will pitch for the Loons.
Friday will also feature an appearance by the current "Clown Prince of Baseball" Myron Noodleman as part of the WILX Summer Entertainment Series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
