Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Thursday night had a tropical feel at Modern Woodmen Park, as Mike Folli launched the first Tiki Bomb of the season and the Quad Cities River Bandits beat the Burlington Bees, 6-0.

Quad Cities (27-24) also got a stellar pitching performance from the tandem starting duo of Mark Diapoules and Nick Additon, who combined to twirl a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and just three walks. Burlington (21-32) put the leadoff man aboard in six of their nine at-bats, but moved that runner to second base just twice and advanced a man to third only once.

After rainfall prior to first pitch created a dark cloud covering, the sun eventually came out and the game began with a breathtaking rainbow arching high above Modern Woodmen Park. The rainbow stretched across the Mississippi River from Iowa to Illinois, giving fans sitting at the brand new Tiki Bar on the right field berm a distinct atmosphere of paradise.

In the bottom of the second, Folli made their night even better. With two men on and nobody out, the 5-foot-10 switch-hitter turned on a 1-0 pitch and clubbed a three-run homer over the Tiki Bar - the first "Tiki Bomb" of the year. While fans throughout the park cheered for the 3-0 lead, those enjoying the ballgame from the Tiki Bar were offered discounted Tiki Bomb drinks for the rest of the inning.

Ahead 3-0, Diapoules and Additon took over from there. Diapoules (4-0), pitching just two days shy of his 20th birthday, held the Bees to three hits while fanning five and walking one, becoming the first River Bandits hurler to win four consecutive decisions this year. Additon (1), a southpaw from Florida, added four hitless innings for the save, striking out four and allowing two walks. The piggyback combination of Diapoules and Additon has now combined on a nine-inning shutout in two straight outings, while Additon extended a personal scoreless innings streak to a team-high 17 frames.

Meanwhile, the River Bandits added three runs in the fifth to complete the scoring. Pete Kozma led it off with a single to center and Nick Peoples reached on an error. Charlie Kingrey followed with an RBI-double to right field that plated Kozma, and another error one batter later allowed Peoples to trot home. Tommy Pham capped the rally with an infield single, scoring Kingrey for the 6-0 advantage.

Sam Runion (0-3) took the loss for Burlington, knocked around for six runs - three earned - on eight hits over four-plus innings of work. Runion has lost all three of his Midwest League outings this season, two of which have come courtesy of the River Bandits.
