Cougars Lose Pitchers Duel

GENEVA, IL - Scott Mitchinson pitched a quality start Thursday night for the Kane County Cougars but came out on the short end of a 2-1 finish against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of 5,402 at Elfstrom Stadium.
Mitchinson (4-2) has posted five quality outings in his last six tries, and it's the second time he's done it against Rattlers right-hander Phillippe Aumont (3-3), who stymied the Cougars with five shutout frames of his own. Mitchinson's only blemish was an unearned run in the top of the sixth that broke a scoreless tie, and he lasted seven frames and yielded just two hits, walking none for the third straight time and striking out seven. Reliever Chad Kerfoot took over and gave up one run in the top of the eighth for a 2-0 count.
The Cougars stranded 10 runners in the game, nine of which came from innings three through seven. They broke through for their lone tally in the eighth off Justin Souza. Danny Hamblin singled, Corey Brown doubled and Greg Dowling posted a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half, but that's as close as the Cougars got. Keith Meyer worked the ninth for his second save. With the series even at a game apiece, the Cougars (31-21) and Rattlers (22-27) go at it again Friday night at 6:30 CT. Craig Italiano (6-0, 0.72) will face Donnie Hume (4-0, 2.02).
