Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN---On Wednesday night, Dayton used a pair of home runs by Zack Cozart to defeat Fort Wayne by a score of 5-4, in the opening game of a four-game series.
Thursday night, it was the Wizards' turn to "go deep", as Justin Baum belted a three-run home run and Felix Carrasco hit a pair, to highlight an 8-3 Fort Wayne victory, played in front of 2,113 fans at Memorial Stadium. The Wizards took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, when a bases-loaded double by Luis Durango scored both Yefri Carvajal and Shane Buschini, putting Fort Wayne on top by a score of 2-0.
Carrasco followed a lead off single by Carvajal against Dragon starting pitcher Jamie Arneson with an opposite field blast over the 16-foot high wall in right-centerfield in the bottom of the fourth, his eighth home run of the year stretching the Fort Wayne advantage to 4-0.
Dayton cut the deficit in half with a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning while facing Wizard starter Matt Teague.
Devin Mesoraco singled to centerfield, then came all the way around to score when Wizard right-fielder Angel Mercado lost a fly ball hit to him off the bat of Jason Bour in the sunlight, the play resulting in a triple and a run batted in.
Bour scored moments later on a double by Logan Parker to make the score 4-2.
It remained 4-2 until Fort Wayne came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Baum belted his fourth home run of the season into the tater sack in left field with one out and teammates Durango and Mercado on base to increase the Wizard lead to 7-2, and Carrasco followed two batters later with a solo shot that cleared the scoreboard in right-centerfield for his second home run of the game and team-leading ninth of the season, increasing the margin to 8-2.
It was the second time that Carrasco hit two home runs in the same game this season, and, as was the case on April 20th (vs. Quad Cities), he hit one home run from each side of the plate.
A sacrifice fly by Bour in the top of the eighth inning hit against relief pitcher Robert Woodard gave the Dragons their final run of the game.
Teague (5-2), who allowed two runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out four in 5.2 innings of work, was credited with the victory.
Arneson (0-1), who gave up four runs on five hits, walked four, and fanned two in 3.1 innings on the mound, suffered the loss.
The four-game series is now tied at one win apiece, with game three scheduled for Friday night.
The starting pitchers are scheduled to be right-handers Wynn Pelzer (4-2, 3.54) of Fort Wayne and Matt Klinker (3-3, 3.30) of Dayton. The game can be heard on both the radio (ESPN Radio 1380) and the Internet (www.fortwaynewizards.com), beginning with the Hupe Insurance Services Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m. (EDT).
