Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind.-Felix Carrasco belted two home runs and Justin Baum drilled a three-run shot as the Fort Wayne Wizards topped the Dayton Dragons 8-3 on Thursday night. The Wizards' win snapped the Dragons three-game winning streak and kept them two games out of the wildcard playoff slot in the Midwest League's Eastern Division playoff race. The Dragons have split the first six games on their current eight game road trip.
Baum's three-run home run broke open a close game in the seventh inning. The homer came off new Dragons reliever Juan Rafael and turned a 4-2 battle into a commanding 7-2 Wizards lead.
Fort Wayne initially picked up the lead in the second inning, scoring twice against Dragons starting pitcher Jamie Arneson. Arneson allowed a lead-off single in the inning and two walks that loaded the bases before Luis Durango blooped a double to right to drive in two runs.
In the Fort Wayne fourth, Carrasco homered to right with a man on base to make it 4-0.
The Dragons got on the board in the sixth. With two outs, Devin Mesoraco singled to center and Jason Bour followed with a line drive that skipped by the Wizards right fielder for a triple as Mesoraco raced around to score. Logan Parker followed with a double to left-center to bring in Boar and make it 4-2.
But Fort Wayne answered with four runs against Rafael in the seventh after the Dominican right-hander had looked very good up to that point in his Midwest League debut. Rafael had retired eight of the first nine batters he faced, but gave up the three-run homer to Baum and a solo shot to Carrasco in the inning as Fort Wayne jumped out to an 8-2 lead.
The Dragons scored the game's final run in the eighth when Brandon Waring drilled his second double of the night, went to third on Mesoraco's single, and scored on Boar's sacrifice fly.
The Dragons finished the night with nine hits. Mesoraco went 3 for 4 and scored a run. Waring had a pair of doubles and a walk. Boar drove in two runs.
Arneson (0-1) suffered the loss. He worked three and one-third innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Left-handed reliever Steven Otterness made his Dragons' debut, pitching a scoreless inning.
The Dragons play at Fort Wayne again on Friday at 7:00 p.m. (WING 1410 AM). Matt Klinker (3-3, 3.30) will start for Dayton. The next home game is Sunday, June 1st at the special start time of 4:00 p.m.
