Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - Chris Newell hit a two-run home run to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning and lift the Great Lakes Loons to a 4-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday night. The Loons have won the first two games of the six-game series that will continue through Sunday.

A crowd of 7,477 was in attendance at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.

The loss dropped the Dragons into third place in the Midwest League's East Division, two games behind first place Fort Wayne.

Wednesday's game was another close battle between the Dragons and Loons after Great Lakes topped the Dragons 6-5 on Tuesday. Five of the eight meetings between the two teams this season have been decided by one or two runs.

The Dragons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Austin Hendrick drilled a home run to right field. The homer was Hendrick's sixth of the season and his third in his last seven games.

Great Lakes scored one run in the third and another in the fourth against Dragons starting pitcher Chase Petty as they took a 2-1 lead. Petty was replaced by reliever John Murphy with one out and runners at first and third in the fourth inning, and Murphy worked out of further trouble.

Carson Rudd entered the game to pitch for the Dragons in the fifth and enjoyed a good start to his outing. Rudd did not allow a hit or run over his first three innings. Meanwhile, the Dragons came back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Mat Nelson walked to start the inning, and two batters later, Jack Rogers delivered a two-out single to drive in Nelson from third and tie the game at 2-2.

But in the top of the eighth, Newell hit a 3-2 pitch for a two-out, two-run home run to give Great Lakes a 4-2 lead. The Dragons did not have a base runner over the final two innings.

Rudd (3-4) was charged with the loss. He worked three and two-thirds innings of relief, allowing three hits and two runs with two walks and four strikeouts. Petty, the starter, left after three and one-third innings, allowing five hits and two runs with two walks and five strikeouts. Braxton Roxby was perfect in finishing the game for the Dragons, retiring all four batters he faced.

The Dragons had just four hits. Austin Callahan had a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games, one short of Jack Rogers for the team's season high in 2023.

Up Next: The Dragons (6-5, 39-38) host Great Lakes (7-4, 52-24) in the third game of the six-game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District. Thomas Farr (1-4, 4.23) is scheduled to start for Dayton.
