BURLINGTON, IA - The Great Lakes Loons and the Burlington Bees split a doubleheader Thursday night at Community Field. The Bees rallied from down 3-0 with a 7-3 win in the first game. The Loons responded with a shutout, 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

JonMichael Redding started Game 1 for the Loons and did not allow a run through the first five innings. His offense staked him to a 3-0 lead, scoring two in the first on back-to-back RBI singles by Tony Delmonico and Matt Wallach and one in the sixth on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

But in the home half of the sixth, Burlington tied the score at three. With one out, Adrian Ortiz tripled down the right field line to plate Patrick Norris. Jason Taylor followed with a sac fly to pull the Bees within one. After a second triple surrendered in the inning (to Nick Francis), Redding was relieved by Cole St. Clair, who uncorked a wild pitch on his second pitch of the inning to tie the score.

The game went into the eighth, when Burlington loaded the bases against St. Clair on three walks - the second two were intentional. David Wood bounced into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. But Jose Bonilla followed and with a 3-1 count, hit a game-winning grand slam to secure the Bees' win.

The Loons responded in the second game of the twinbill. Starters Geison Aguasviva and Tim Melville each hurled five scoreless frames. The game remained scoreless in the top of the seventh, when Nick Buss led off the frame with a bunt single down the third base line against reliever Blaine Hardy. With one out, Angelo Songco singled to left. Then Matt Wallach walked to load the bases. The next batter Travis Vetters hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Buss with the game's first run. Songco took third on the throw. Then with Esteban Lopez at the plate, the Loons executed a successful double steal with Wallach swiping second and, most importantly, Songco stealing home, giving the Loons a 2-0 advantage.

The Loons stole five bases in the second game and twice successfully executed a double steal. Songco's steal of home was the Loons first since Parker Dalton stole home July 7, 2008 at Dayton.

The Loons and Bees conclude their three-game series Friday night in Burlington beginning at 7:30pm. Midwest League all-star Josh Walter (5-3, 3.30 ERA) gets the starting nod for the Loons opposite righty Mike Lehman (3-3, 4.37). The game will be carried in Mid-Michigan on ESPN 100.9-FM and worldwide on Loons.com.
