Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
July 23, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied with five runs in the top of the 8th inning, but couldn't hold the lead in a 8-7 loss to the Beloit Snappers on Thursday night a Pohlman Field in Beloit, WI. Alexi Amarista led the Kernels, going 3-5 with two doubles, a triple, and 3 RBI and Tyson Auer went 2-5 with two runs scored.
Kernels starter Buddy Boshers allowed six runs on six hits and struck out four over five-plus innings in his first start since being called up from Orem. Nick Pugliese struck out two over two innings out of the Kernel bullpen.
Beloit catcher Danny Rams went 3-4 with a HR, two doubles and 3 RBI and Angel Morales hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth. Snapper starter Daniel Berlind allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings in a no-decision effort.
The Kernels took a 7-6 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but an RBI double by Rams and an RBI single by Jon Waltenbury off Kernels reliever Vladimir Veras (3-4) proved to be the game winning plays. Reliever Billy Bullock (2-0) picked up the win and Matt Williams worked around two hits in the ninth for his 8th save.
The loss drops the Kernels to 16-10 in the MWL second half and 56-40 overall. It's the fourth one run loss in their last five games as they fall to 3-5 with one game remaining in their nine game road trip. Beloit improves to 11-15 and 38-58 overall.
