West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

DAVENPORT, IA - A three-run sixth inning proved to be the turning point Thursday night in the West Michigan Whitecaps' 6-2 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park. Trailing 2-0, the Whitecaps produced three straight two-out hits to jump ahead. ‘Caps starter Mark Sorensen gave another terrific performance on the mound as the Whitecaps won for the eighth time in ten games.

Quad Cities came into the second game of the series having lost four in a row. ‘Bandits' starter Scott McGregor held the ‘Caps in check for the first five innings.

His teammates gave him help in the fourth. With a man on and two outs, Frederick Parejo ripped a two-run double down the left field line. The ‘Bandits lead 2-0.

But in the top of the sixth, the Whitecaps finally broke through. After a line-out by Hernan Perez, Brent Wyatt singled to right and stole second base. Ben Guez brought him home with the first of the two-out hits. Billy Nowlin plated Guez who had stolen second to tie the game. And Jordan Lennerton chased home Nowlin to put the ‘Caps ahead, 3-2.

West Michigan added a run in the seventh on Brent Wyatt's sacrifice fly that scored Joe Bowen.

Bryan Pounds smashed a two-run home run to left in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Pounds' third homer of the year increased the ‘Caps lead to 6-2.

Mark Sorensen lasted 8 innings for the second straight start. After giving up Parejo's two-run double, Sorensen retired the next 11 men he faced. He gave up 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out five.

Ben Guez finished 2-5. Billy Nowlin had two hits as did Bryan Pounds. Hernan Perez was 3-4.

The Whitecaps go for the series sweep on Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Luke Putkonen takes the ball as the starter at 8:00 p.m. EST.
