Kernels fall to Snappers, 2-1, in 10 innings

July 22, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped the first game of a three game series against the Beloit Snappers, 2-1 in 10 innings, on Wednesday night at Pohlman Field in Beloit, WI. Beloit starter Brad Tippett held the Kernels to a run on just three hits over 8.2 innings, as Kernels starter Manaurys Correa held Beloit to a run on five hits and struck out five over six innings. Neither starter figured in the final decision.

Gabe Jacobo had two of the Kernels three hits, including an RBI triple to score Alexi Amarista in the top of the ninth and send the game to extra innings. Darwin Perez had the Kernels third hit, a triple in the sixth inning, but was erased on a double play to end the inning.

Beloit won the game on a groundout with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning. James Beresford grounded out to short as Angel Morales never stopped running and scored from second on the play. Christian Scholl (3-2) was the tough-luck loser, striking out three and allowing one hit over 2 innings of relief. Billy Bullock (1-0) took the win for Beloit, striking out one over 1.1 innings of relief.

The playoff-bound Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, July 25th and open a six game home stand with games against South Bend and Kane County.
