Bees and Great Lakes Split Double-Header

Burlington, IA (July 22, 2009) - The Burlington Bees split a double-header with Great Lakes Thursday night at Community Field winning game one 7-3 and losing the second game 2-0. In the first game, Jose Bonilla hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game. In the second, Tim Melville pitched five innings allowing just one hit but the Bees were unable to get a run on the board.

Great Lakes scored the first three runs on the first game. The Bees then came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. Patrick Norris reached first on a Fielder's Choice with one out and then scored on an Adrian Ortiz triple. Ortiz then scored the Bees' second run on the day when Jason Taylor hit a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Nick Francis tripled and then scored from third on a wild pitch. In a game scheduled to go seven innings, the two teams were tied in the eighth inning. The Bees loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth on three walks, two of which were intentional. Bonilla then hit the Bees' first grand-slam of the season to give the Bees a walk-off 7-3 win.

Sam Runion got the start for the Bees and pitched 5.1 innings allowing three runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk. Craig Rodriguez made his Bees debut pitching 1.2 innings allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. James Thompson pitched one scoreless inning with one strikeout and one walk and picked up the win to move to 4-1. The Bees had eight hits in the game. Adrian Ortiz and Bonilla each had two hits. Francis scored two runs. Bonilla had four RBI.

In the second game, the only scoring that took place occurred in the top of the seventh inning when Great Lakes put two runs on the board. The Bees had just four hits in the game with Ortiz accounting for two of them. Between the two games, Ortiz had four hits.

Melville got the start and did not allow a hit in his first 4.1 innings. He ended up going five shutout innings allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts and one walks. The seven strikeouts tied a career-high. Blaine Hardy pitched two innings allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Hardy took the loss to move to 4-4 on the season.

The Bees will wrap up the three-game series with Great Lakes Friday night at Community Field. Mike Lehmann is the scheduled starter for the Bees. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
