Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons used nine hits and a quality start from Angel Sanchez to knock off the visiting South Bend Silver Hawks Saturday night by the score of 6-1, snapping a six-game losing streak in front of a sell-out Dow Diamond crowd of 5,646. The sellout was the fourteenth of the season.
The Loons took an early 1-0 lead, benefiting from two South Bend errors in the third inning to push Casio Grider across home plate. Grider had led off the inning with an infield single and the throw to first base sailed over Ramon Castillo, advancing him to second. On the next play, Leon Landry hit into a groundout, which was followed by the throwing error that scored Grider.
Catcher Steve Domecus helped add two more runs to the Loons lead in the fourth inning with a home run to centerfield estimated at 404 feet. The homer was on an 0-0 pitch and was Domecus' fifth of the season.
"I usually look for a fastball on the first pitch and he just kind of laid one in there for me," Domecus said after the game. "It's been frustrating the last couple of weeks for this entire team and it feels good to come out and put nine hits and six runs up on the board tonight."
The Loons tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI-single from Charlie Mirabal and got another from a Leon Landry sacrifice-fly in the seventh. The team's final run came in the eighth on another sac-fly, this time from first baseman Blake Dean.
"I think we may have been trying a little too hard," Domecus said of the team's approach during their race to the playoffs. "We ended up getting in a little funk, and were eliminated. But now that we are not in the playoffs, it's almost like there's a monkey off our back and everyone is more relaxed."
Controlling the action defensively was Loons starting pitcher Angel Sanchez, who limited the Silver Hawks to one run on four hits over seven innings of work. The righty struck out six and walked only one to pick up his eighth win of the season. Pete Budkevics tossed two hitless innings, striking out four.
The Loons will play their second-to-last game of the season on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Starting for the Loons will be LHP Greg Wilborn (3-4, 3.75) against South Bend's RHP J.R. Bradley (6-15, 4.89). It's a Family Fun in the SUNday with postgame Kids Run the Bases presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. During the game, Smitty's Iron Works will pit eight Loons fans against each other for the World's Strongest Loons Fan promotion.
