WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Matt Long started strong and Matt Zaleski polished off a prominent pitching performance in leading Winston-Salem to a 4-1 win over Potomac in the series opener on Thursday night at Ernie Shore Field. Long (7-11) went 6 2/3 innings while holding the Nationals to one run on six hits. He struck out eight, including the first four batters of the game to collect the win. Zaleski kept Potomac hitless the rest of the way to earn his fourth save of the season.

The Warthogs broke open a scoreless game with three runs of Erik Arnesen in the fourth inning. John Shelby III led off with a double and advanced to third on a fielding error on the play. Joe Persichina followed with a single to give Winston-Salem the lead. Next, C.J. Retherford singled and a double steal moved the runners to second and third. Brett Bonvechio lifted an RBI sac fly and Salvador Sanchez laced a double that scored Retherford to give the Warthogs a 3-0 lead.

Potomac answered with their lone run in the top of the fifth. Darryl Lawhorn lined a double to start the inning and Jhonatan Solano singled put runners on the corners with no outs. Long induced a double play from Brian Finegan, but a run scored on the play to trim the Nationals deficit to two.

Winton-Salem tacked on a run in the sixth inning when C.J. Retherford hit a towering solo home run over the left field fence. It was his team leading 16th round-tripper and first since hitting a solo shot against Myrtle Beach on July 18.

Erik Arnesen (2-1) suffered his first Carolina League loss after allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings.
