Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach, S.C. - It was a perfect combination of outstanding baseball, exciting promotions, unique giveaways and a jaw-dropping- rehab-start. While the Pelicans went 7-0 during the most recent homestand, the organization broke the seven-game homestand attendance record. From July 31st through August 6th, the Pelicans drew a new record of 30,173 fans into BB&T Coastal Field. The previous mark was 28,563, set interestingly enough between July 31st and August 6th of 2003.
The homestand reached its pinnacle on Monday, August 4th, when Cooperstown-bound Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine made a rehabilitation start for the Pelicans. In front of a Pelicans franchise record crowd of 6,599 fans, Glavine tossed four solid innings, allowing just a single run. The crowd also equaled the 10-year ballpark record, achieved back on June 24th when the Pelicans hosted the 2008 California vs. Carolina League All-Star Game.
The seven-game home stay on the Grand Strand got off to a great start on Thursday, July 31st. On Cowboy Night and Thirsty Thursday, presented by Land Shark Lager and Malibu's Surf Bar, the fourth largest crowd of the season (5,037) turned out to watch the Pelicans take on the Lynchburg Hillcats.
Although the first game of the homestand and Tom Glavine's rehab start were the highlights, every game during the homestand attracted a large crowd. The Pelicans averaged 4,310 fans per night. On Friday, August 1st, 3,784 fans attended Jersey Bag Giveaway Night presented by Angelo's Steak & Pasta. On Saturday, August 2nd, 3,865 fans showed their support for the Pelicans on Pennsylvania Night. The following night, 3,553 fans flocked to BB&T Coastal Field and were treated to a fantastic fireworks extravaganza. On August 5th, 3,564 fans turned out as Reggy "The Purple Party Dude" appeared to entertain the masses. The homestand concluded on Wednesday, August 6th, as 3,771 fans attended to receive the 10th Anniversary Photo-ball Collector's Series #3, featuring Andy Marte and Adam LaRoche.
"I can't say enough about the energy and excitement we had at BB&T Coastal Field during this past homestand," said Pelicans' General Manager North Johnson. "Having future Hall-of-Famer Tom Glavine along with our array of tremendous promotions made this attendance record possible."
With 12 home contests remaining in 2008, the Pelicans are also continuing their assault on the all-time single-season franchise attendance record. The Pelicans are currently 36,318 fans shy of the record, set during the 2000 campaign, when 234,019 fans ventured to the ballpark. If the record is broken, the Pelicans will show their appreciation by hosting a full-scale celebration. A grand prize winner will receive two tickets to an Atlanta Braves game at Turner Field and hotel accommodations amongst other fantastic prizes.
The Pelicans return to the Grand Strand on Thursday, August 14th to begin a four-game tilt with the Northern Division front-runners Potomac. Don't miss your chance to catch the Pelicans in their final 12 regular season home games before the playoffs.
