Kinston doubles Avs up in opener

Kinston, NC-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, was overwhelmed Thursday night by a 15-hit effort from the Kinston Indians in a series opener at Grainger Stadium. Kinston (26-20) got a home run and three hits from Beau Mills in the effort against Salem (16-29).

The Indians took the early lead with a nine-batter first inning. With one on and one out, Mills smoked a ball over the center-field wall for a two-run homer. Then, the next three batters reached to load the bases for Matt McBride. The designated hitter flicked a ball to right field that scored Jared Goedert for a sacrifice fly and the 3-0 lead.

Each team scored a run in the third and fourth to bring a 5-2 score to the top of the fifth inning. The leadoff batter, Jhon Florentino walked on four pitches. Then, Tim Torres singled to bring Mark Ori to the plate. The first baseman doubled to left field to score Florentino, Ori's second RBI of the game. The following batter, Koby Clemens, stroked a single to center to plate Tim Torres and cut the lead to one.

Kinston, though, retaliated en masse. With one out, the K-Tribe posted three straight singles to load the bases. After a strikeout, Jared Goedert poked a single to center to score Cirilo Cumberbatch and Lucas Montero. After a walk, Niuman Romero singled to right to score a pair of runs. On the play, a throwing error across the diamond from Mark Ori plated the final run.

Later, Ori picked his third RBI up on a single in the sixth and the final Salem run came across on Koby Clemens' second home run in as many games.

Salem and Kinston continue their series at 7 PM Friday with lefty Douglas Arguello throwing for the Avs against the Indians' Carlton Smith.
