YPSILANTI, MI - For the second straight night the Florence Freedom were helped out by playing big fly as they hit two homeruns on their way to a 9-6 win over the Midwest Sliders.
Freedom third baseman Johnny Welch opening the scoring with his first homerun of the season, a three run shot to put Florence up 3-0 in the first inning. Justin Pickett hit the second of the Freedom's homeruns with the team leading 7-6 at the time in the seventh. Pickett took Eric Gilliland deep and out to left-center for his fifth of the season to make it 9-6.
Nolan Shaffer started for the Freedom and only lasted through the third. The right-hander allowed five earned runs on seven hits as the bullpen and offense backed him up.
Carlos De La Rosa (1-0) pitched 4.2 innings in his longest appearance of 2009 for the win. De La Rosa allowed just three hits and one run, a solo homerun by Jonnie Knoble in the sixth, in the victory.
Jonathan Miller closed out the contest for the Freedom with his third save of the season by getting Sam Deluca to hit into a game ending double play.
Ryan Basham scored two runs for Florence and now is the franchise's all-time leader in runs scored sitting at 122, passing Greg Stone.
With the win the Freedom (12-6) are now 7-1 on the road and will go the sweep of the three game set Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. before returning home starting Friday for a six game home stand. Tune in while the first place Freedom are on the air at 106.7 FM or 1067WNKR.com.
