Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - For the second Wednesday in a row, the Lake Erie Crushers were shut out as Kalamazoo used a five-hit shutout by lefty Trent Lare to beat the Crushers by the final of 2-0.
The Kings scored in the first inning when Brandon Anderson reached on a walk, then went to third on a wild pitch by Crushers starter Darwin DeLeon. A sacrifice fly by Tim Brown brought home Anderson to make it one to nothing.
The only other run of the game came in the fourth for Kalamazoo as Kyle Higgins' two-out double brought home Jett Ruiz. Lake Erie held the Kings to just three hits all night as DeLeon worked six innings, striking out five and walking five. His record on the season falls to 1-2.
"I was happy with what Darwin did out there tonight. He pitched pretty well," said manager John Massarelli.
But as well as DeLeon had it going at Homer Stryker Field, Lare was better. He went the distance, allowing five hits while striking out six and walking two. The Crushers best opportunities to score came in the third and fourth innings as the first two men reached base in both frames. But both times, Lare bore down and got out of trouble.
Cristobal Mata worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Lake Erie, striking out four.
The same two teams will wrap up the three game series tomorrow night in Kalamazoo. Kevin Skogley will get the start against Bernard Robert.
