Loggers Topple Woodchucks, Score 13 In Route

July 20, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Wausau Woodchucks News Release

After allowing five runs over the first two innings, the Wisconsin Woodchucks were unable to comeback off a sterling pitching performance by La Crosse starter Brando Tessar, falling to the Loggers 13-1.

The Woodchucks, who came in batting only .215 over the past five games, collected only 6 hits and one walk.

Wisconsin's offensive attack was bewildered by first-half All-Star Brando Tessar, who allowed only one run, and only five Woodchucks to reach base through seven innings of work.

Justin Burns and Jonathon Boersma, conversely, combined to allow eight runs over the first five innings of play.

The Loggers strung together 20 hits and continued to stay hot at the plate, scoring 13 runs.

With the loss, the Loggers will leapfrog the Woodchucks in the South Division standings and move into second place.

Woodchuck's starter Justin Burns struggled mightily in the first game since the three-day Northwoods League All-Star break, giving up an early lead against a Loggers team that came in half a game behind Wisconsin in the South Division standings.

Burns allowed one run in the first inning - an Andrew Knapp sacrifice fly to score Trent Copeland - before stranding the bases loaded.

Jimmy Brennan sandwiched a single between a strikeout and a groundout to start the second inning, but the Loggers went on to hit two singles, followed to two doubles, to score four runs off Burns. La Crosse entered play Wednesday hitting only .188 with runners in scoring position and two outs.

After stranding a two-out double in the third frame, Justin Burns called it a night, allowing five earned runs and nine hits, striking out two, through three innings of work.

Jonathon Boersma took over for the ‘Chucks in the fourth, and gave the ‘Chucks a much-needed one-two-three inning - before a walk and a bloop single in the fifth frame turned into a three-run Jimmy Brennan homerun - putting the ‘Chucks in an 8-0 hole.

Tessar worked brilliantly in his second start against the Woodchucks, preventing the ‘Chucks from collecting a hit until the fourth inning, and not allowing a run until Kyle DeMerritt hit a solo homerun to the short porch in right field in the fifth. He worked through the seventh inning, allowing four hits in total, walking none, and allowing only one run while taking the win.

Boersma allowed another run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh, before departing after the eighth. Boersma ended the night with eight hits, one walk and four runs allowed through five innings of work.

Gabe Feldman pitched the ninth and allowed four runs, although two were unearned after the inning started with two consecutive errors. Brando Tessar improved to 5-1, while Justin Burns dropped to 1-2.

The Loggers and ‘Chucks will meet again Thursday to conclude this year's Athletic Park series, as Nick Greene (2-1) and Erik Schoenrock (6-1) continue the positioning battle atop the South Division standings on Bucky Badger Night.
