Madison Mallards News Release

WATERLOO, IA - July 20, 2011 - The Madison Mallards defeated the Waterloo Bucks 11-8 Wednesday night at Riverfront Stadium in the opener of a two-game series. The Mallards rallied behind strong offensive performances by Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) and Matt Juengel (Texas A&M).

In the team's first game back from the All-Star break, the Mallards busted out with 15 hits and came back after being down four runs in the fifth inning.

Theunissen picked up right where he led off, starting the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning, and finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. He also hit a single in the eighth that produced the game-winning run. Juengel went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

Justin Parr (Illinois) had three hits and drove in two, Zack Powers (Florida) had three hits (two doubles), and Kyle Moody (St. Scholastica) had three hits. The five aforementioned Mallards were the only players to have multiple hits for the team compared to Waterloo's two players.

The Bucks led the game for more than half of the night, but relinquished the lead in the eighth. Leading the way for Waterloo's offense was Davis Hendrickson (Illinois) and Cameron Perkins (Purdue), two of the team's All-Stars. Combined, the duo went 5-for-7 and scored four of the team's runs and had two RBI.

The winning pitcher for the Mallards was Denny Clement (Texas A&M). Clement came on in the seventh and also pitched the eighth. He gave up one run on one hit, walked one, and struck out two to earn his first victory of the season.

Starter Jonathan Crawford (Florida) did not have one of his best starts Wednesday as he left after the second inning. He allowed four runs on three hits and walked five batters. Tom Windle (Minnesota) also pitched in relief, and Tony Bryant (Oregon State) worked around a walk and struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season.

The loss went to Waterloo's Kyle Kramp (Butler). Kramp pitched the eighth inning and gave up the three runs to the Ducks on four hits. He walked one and did not strike anyone out and is now 2-2 this season.

The Mallards and Bucks will square off again Thursday, with another 6:35 p.m. start at Riverfront Stadium. A pair of All-Stars will face off as Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech) goes up against Chase Stevens (Seminole State Community College).
