La Crosse Loggers News Release

LA CROSSE, WI - Despite out hitting the visiting Wisconsin Woodchucks (9-14), the La Crosse Loggers (15-9) fell 5-2.

Liam Rafferty (Florida Gulf Coast) started in his first game as a Logger. The junior lasted just three innings, scattering three hits and two walks.

In the top of the first, Rafferty hit right fielder Austin Diemer and then walked catcher John Clay Reeves to put two runners on with two outs. Damek Tomscha came through for the Woodchucks with an RBI-single to give them an early 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin struck once again in the second inning. First baseman Josh Goossen-Brown started things out with a single. After another single by Kirby Tyler, Rafferty hit another batter to load the bases. Diemer then hit a deep sacrifice fly to fight field, scoring Goossen-Brown.

With two outs, the Logger right-hander attempted to pick of Tyler Stieb but overthrew first baseman Connor Teykl (Rice); Taylor came around to score on the error. A wild pitch would bring in Stieb and push Wisconsin's lead to 4-0.

The Loggers loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with no outs. Teykl then hit a rope right at the first baseman, who then stepped on first base for the double play. Shortstop Brandon Defazio (San Mateo) drove in catcher Max McDowell (UCONN) with a two-out single, minimizing the lead to 4-1.

La Crosse scored another run in the bottom of the fourth. Designated hitter Zack Rivera (Long Beach State) started things out with a single and Defazio reached on an error by Krieg. With runners on the corner, Bobby Juan (Minnesota) plated Rivera with a single of his own. But that would be all the scoring La Crosse could muster up for the rest of the night.

Derek Gordon (Park University) pitched extremely well out of the bullpen for La Crosse. Gordon gave up just three hits in five innings and struck out six.

In the ninth, Nick Piscotty (Duke) came on and struck out three of the four batters he faced.

Johnny Bekakis (Long Beach State) finished the night 2-4 at the plate for the Loggers.

The two teams will be back in action Saturday night at the Lumberyard. Gates will open at 5:00 and the first pitch is slated for 6:05pm. Tune into the Loggers Radio Network where Micah Schroeder and Nick Rytilahti will bring you all of the action.
