Blue Anchors Fall to Rochester, 9-4

Alexandria, MN - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Rochester Honkers by a score of 9-4 in the opening game of a two-game series at Knute Nelson Memorial Park. The loss puts Alexandria at 4-18 on the season.

The Honkers grabbed an early first inning lead off starter Spencer Koopmans, who was making his Blue Anchor debut. Koopmans retired the first two batters of the game before allowing a base hit to Tyler Baker. Alex Greer was hit by a pitch and Michael Pomeroy hit a single to centerfield to plate Baker and give Rochester the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the Blue Anchors knotted the score against Rochester starter Nick Dolsky. Aaron Overbeck reached second base on an error by the shortstop Carter Burgess to start the inning. With two outs, Keegan Dale doubled to left to score Overbeck and the score was tied 1-1.

Greer reached first after he struck out but went to first on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth. He preceded to steal second base and designated hitter Jared Deacon singled home Greer to give the Honkers a 2-1 advantage.

Rochester's lead grew in the top of the sixth off starter Koopmans. Greer singled with one out and went to second on another stolen base. An error by Dale with two outs scored Greer and the Honkers lead grew to 3-1.

Austin Listi and Andrew Mulato both drew one-out walks in the bottom of the sixth and an error by first baseman Pomeroy scored Listi making the score 3-2 in favor of Rochester. Overbeck singled to left field to bring home Mulato to tie the score at three.

In the fourth, Mickie Keuning came in relief of Koopmans. The first batter faced, Reid Roper singled to start the frame before being forced out on a grounder off the bat of Kalei Hanawahine. Burgess grounded out to second moving Hanawahine to second base. Baker and Greer walked to load the bases with two outs. On a 1-1 offering, Pomeroy homered to center for a grand slam to give Rochester a 7-3 lead.

Scott Sanderson entered to pitch in the top of the eighth and gave up a double to Tucker Tharp to start the inning. A one-out double from Roper scored Tharp to extend the Honker's lead to 8-3. A single with two outs from Burgess scored Roper and Rochester lead 9-3.

Mulato hit a one-out single and Gretz followed with a single in the bottom of the eighth. Overbeck drew a walk to load the bases and one run came in on a fielder's choice by Dalton Leuschke to make the score 9-4. Andrew Sohn struck out to end the inning and the scoring for both teams.

Koopmans received a no-decision going six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. He struck out six and walked one. Keuning (0-1) took the loss while pitching one inning, giving up four runs on two hits and two walks. One three hits, one walk and one strikeout Sanderson gave up two runs in one inning of work. Ross Slaney pitched a scoreless ninth surrendering just a hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Andrew Mulato (RF) - In five trips to the plate, the Michigan State outfielder had two hits and a walk while scoring two runs for the Blue Anchors. He saw his average climb to .254 on the season in 19 games played.

Notes: Tim Cusick had one hit which extended his hitting streak to 14 games...Koopmans quality start is the first for Alexandria in six games...The Blue Anchors are now 0-5 against the Honkers in 2013...Overbeck's 18 walks are second in the Northwoods League...Alexandria is now in a six-game losing streak which ties the teams longest on the season...The two-game series with Rochester comes to an end Friday with the game starting at 7:05 p.m...The game can be seen live at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.
