June 21, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Eau Claire, WI- The Eau Claire Express defeated the Rafters Friday evening at Carson Park in a rain-shortened contest, 9-1. The shortened ballgame was completed after the seventh inning and was the second game this season for the Rafters that had to be called because of inclement whether, the last coming in the form of a 4-1 loss in a game against the Madison Mallards. The loss was just the second loss in the Rafters last eight ballgames and snapped a season-high three-game winning streak.
Eau Claire used a big six-run first inning to bust the game open and knocked Rafters starter, Greg Maisto, out of the game after the Texas A&M freshman threw 40 pitches in the opening frame. Maisto saw 10 batters throughout the inning while issuing four hits. The six-run first inning was the third time this season the Rafters have allowed a team to score six runs in the opening inning with the last coming against the Lakeshore Chinooks on May 30.
The game was a frustrating couple of hours for the Rafters as they used a combination of three pitchers to piece together the remaining six innings of play. Trevor Koehn threw four innings while yielding way to two runs and six hits, while Derek Kawlewski added two innings and issuing two hits and was tagged for a run.
The Rafters offense combined for just three hits on an evening the Express starter, Zak Shockley, threw seven complete innings. Donnie Dewees continued his tear through the Northwoods League as he followed a three-hit day with a single and a run scored. Dewees now has a team-leading batting average of .386.
The Rafters and Express will continue their three-game series tomorrow with a 6:35 game at Carson Park. Fans can listen to tomorrow's game by tuning into the home of Rafters baseball, WFHR AM 1320, as Aaron Berlin broadcasts all the action.
