Lively dishes shutout for first win of season
April 27, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Reading Fightin Phils News Release
Ben Lively (1-0) continued the trend of very good starting pitching as he tossed seven shutout innings to lead Reading (10-7) to a 5-0 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (3-12). The win was Lively's first win as a Fightin Phil and issued Richmond their tenth straight loss.
Lively and Joe Biagini (0-2) were pitching well through the first six innings as both teams failed to score a run. Reading broke that streak in the top of the 7th inning as Biagini issued a walk to Altherr than a single to Brock Stassi. Both runners advanced on an error from Mitch Delfino to have runners on second and third with no outs.
Joan Gregorio enters in relief and strikes out Gabriel Lino. KC Serna hits a sacrifice fly to score Altherr to give Reading a 1-0 lead. Brian Pointer walks in the following at-bat then Gustavo Pierre hits a RBI single to give the Fightin Phils a 2-0 lead.
Lively left after seven innings of work as he gave up six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts (season-high). The Fightin Phils scored three more runs in the top of the 8th inning to take a 5-0 lead. Roman Quinn led off the inning with his second home run of the season. Brodie Greene walked in the next at-bat then Altherr flew out to center field. Richmond called in left-handed reliever Phil McCormick to pitch to Stassi and he paid for it as Stassi hit a RBI double.
McCormick left for Tyler Mizenko who gave up a RBI single to Gabriel Lino to cap off the inning. Nefi Ogando finished out the game for the Fightin Phils as he pitched two shutout innings in relief. Brock Stassi leads the Eastern League with now 19 runs batted in.
The Fightin Phils continue their series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels beginning on Tuesday night at The Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm. Fans can listen to the game on fightins.com beginning at 6:15 pm. Fans can also view the game on MiLB.tv beginning at 6:35 pm.
