Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - The Miami Marlins announced a pair of transactions that impact their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight's game against the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Park at 7:15 p.m.
Catcher Wilfredo Gimenez has been placed on the disabled list with a left lat strain. Gimenez played in 44 games with the Suns, hitting .243 with a home run and 21 RBI along with eight doubles.
Additionally, the Marlins have signed right-handed pitcher Jon Link and assigned him to Jacksonville. Link was pitching this season with the Wichita Wignuts in the independent American Association, and in 19 starts he was 11-2 with a 3.26 ERA.
Link is a former Sun, making three relief appearances during the 2012 season with Jacksonville, going 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in three innings with a save. Link also pitched in the Southern League with the Birmingham Barons in 2008, going 5-4 with a 3.02 ERA in 56 relief appearances with 35 saves, which led the league, as he was also a Southern League Postseason All-Star that season.
Link pitched in the major leagues in 2010 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, with no wins or losses and a 4.15 ERA during his nine games pitched in relief. Link was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the 26th round of the 2005 draft out of Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Suns roster now stands at 25 active players, and a revised roster is attached.
Tonight the Suns are set to throw out right-hander Jay Rogers (6-5, 4.20) for the opener, while the Smokies will counter with a righty of their own in Corey Black (6-7, 3.06).
Suns fans can listen to Saturday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
