Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The Lincoln Saltdogs opened up a big lead Tuesday, then held on for a 6-4 win over St. Paul at Midway Stadium. The victory keeps the Saltdogs 1.5 games behind Sioux City in the American Association North, with four games left to play.
Lincoln opened up a 6-0 lead through 4 ½ innings against Saints starter Charlie Ruud (12-4), thanks in part to two big blows from Shea McFeely. The Saltdogs third baseman opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning, his fourth of the year. Lincoln added an unearned run in the second as well to take a 2-0 lead, then broke things open in the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, McFeely drove a 2-2 pitch from Ruud all the way to the warning track in center, clearing the bases and making the score 5-0. McFeely later scored on an RBI single by Deacon Burns, giving the Dogs a comfortable 6-0 advantage.
The Saints, however, would not go quietly. Lincoln starter Ryan Trytten (5-5) took a no-hitter into the fifth, but St. Paul put together three straight hits with two outs, cutting the lead to 6-2. Trytten departed after six strong innings, but the Lincoln bullpen had control problems over the final three frames, walking four batters and falling behind several others. St. Paul scored a run without a hit in the seventh, with the runner coming home on a Saltdogs error. The Saints repeated the feat in the ninth, and had the tying runs on base with two outs, but Matt Hammons struck out ex-Saltdog Kevin Sullivan to earn his fifth save.
On the night, McFeely finished 2-for-4 with four RBI. Dustin Yount and Shawn McGill also had two hits apiece for Lincoln, as the Saltdogs improved to 26-18 on the second half of the season. Lincoln is also 7-2 since manager Tim Johnson returned from his medical leave of absence.
The Saltdogs and Saints play the finale of their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05. Jarrett Gardner is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln.
