Sioux City Explorers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA -- Lincoln got a key 2 run HR from Jonny Kaplan and Sioux City spoiled a great pitching performance from Tim Layden as Lincoln beat Sioux City 4-0 at Lewis & Clark Park on Wednesday night.
Layden and Ryan Trytten had a pitchers duel going until the 8th when Shawn McGill reached on an error by 3B Alex Llanos and then Kaplan hit a HR over the wall down the line in left to give the Saltdogs a 2-0 lead. Lincoln added 2 more runs for insurance in the 9th on a 2 run double by McGill.
It was the longest outing of Layden's career, going 7+ innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2. The last time Layden went this long in a game was on August 17, 2004 for the Chicago Cubs rookie league team in Arizona. The X's had 6 hits on the night and Lincoln pitchers walked 5 but the Explorers stranded 10 men on base. Sioux City left 2 on in the 2nd, 5th and 7th innings and were 0-7 with runners in scoring position.
Dustin Jones and Chris Grossman each had 2 hits apiece for the Explorers. Luis Perez was 2-3 with a run for the Saltdogs.
The X's will send Dusty Bergman to the mound in the rubber match on Thursday night while Lincoln is expected to activate Josh Kauten off the disabled list. Game time is 7:05 pm and tickets are available by calling 277-WINS.
