
Saints Hold on for 6-3 Victory Over Diablos

EL PASO, TX (May 28) - The St. Paul Saints cruised for eight innings on Wednesday night at Cohen Stadium, but had to hang on in the ninth inning as they picked up their third straight victory beating the El Paso Diablos 6-3.
With the Saints leading 6-1 in the ninth Matt Kent started the Diablos half of the ninth with a triple to right-center. Alex Derhak drove him home with a single. Bryon Smith single to center putting runners at first and second and chasing Saints reliever Craig Molldrem for closer Tony Pierce. He retired J.D. Reininger on a flyout to center. Evan Conley followed with an RBI single to right and a walk to Kory Drew loaded the bases with one out. Pierce got Albenis Machado to foul out and then struck out Stantrel Smith to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
The Saints once again got off to a good start scoring two runs in the second inning as Marcel Longmire led off with a double off the left field wall. Kevin Sullivan, who finished the night 3-4 with two RBI, collected his first with an RBI single to right. Jason Colson walked and Brent Krause singled to left, but Sullivan was thrown out trying to score. The runners, however, moved up to second and third. Brian Sprout plated Colson with a groundout to short.
After the Diablos scored a run in the bottom of the second the Saints answered in the third when Scooter Jordan hit an infield single to short and advanced to second on an errant thrown by Albenis Machado. Jordan scored on a single to right by Andrew Bennett giving the Saints a 3-1. Bennett finished the night 2-4 with his first professional RBI and a run scored.
The Saints extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth when Jordan led off with a walk. Bennett singled him to second and Tim Brown walked to load the bases. Marcel Longmire drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run and Sullivan's fielder's choice plated another.
Saints starter Luis Villarreal picked up his second victory of the season going 5.0 innings allowing one run on six hits while walking one.
The same two teams meet on Thursday night at Cohen Stadium at 8:05 p.m. central time. The Saints send RHP Justin Lord (2-1, 3.33) to the mound against Diablos RHP David Whigham (2-1, 4.50).
