Canaries top Wingnuts, 7-4

Wichita, KS - The Sioux Falls Canaries (10-8) bounced back with a 7-4 win over the Wichita Wingnuts (12-8) on Wednesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Kennard Bibbs drove in a pair of runs while going 1-for-2 with three sacrifices at the plate.
The Canaries scored four runs on just one single in the third inning. Patrick Reilly and Paul Smyth led the inning off with back-to-back walks. Tim Hutting laid down a sacrifice bunt, but was safe at first when the pitcher misplayed the bunt. With the bases loaded, Bibbs hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Reilly for a 1-0 lead. Beau Torbert followed with a single to bring home Smyth and the Canaries took a 2-0 advantage. After Ben Van Iderstine walked to fill the bases, Josh Patton and Grant Richardson drew back-to-back bases loaded walks, each plating a run. After two and a half innings, the Canaries led 4-0.
The Birds added to their lead in the fourth. Smyth led the inning off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Hutting. Bibbs drove in his second run of the game with a single to score Smyth and the Canaries extended their lead to five, 5-0.
Wichita got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs Heath Keel singled and stole second base. Keel advanced to third on a single by Chris Colton. After Colten stole second to put two in scoring position, Stephen Pearson singled to plate Keel and Colton making it a three-run game, 5-2.
The Wingnuts added two more with back-to-back home runs by Michael Thompson and David Gates in the fifth inning. The pair of two-out homers pulled Wichita within a run, 5-4.
The Canaries pulled away in the top of the seventh inning. Van Iderstine singled and Patton doubled to put two in scoring position. Van Iderstine scored when Richardson reached on a dropped third strike, and Patton scored when Reilly grounded into a double play. The added runs gave the Canaries the 7-4 final.
Angelo Morales (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Canaries and Kris Regas picked up his fifth save of the season. Demetri White (0-3) took the loss for Wichita.
The Canaries and Wingnuts wrap-up the three-game series on Thursday night at 7:05. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday to host the Lincoln Saltdogs. Friday's game will feature Negro League Uniforms and Friday Night Fireworks.
